I deleted my Facebook account a few minutes ago. It had been on my mind for awhile, and I just got a wild hair and did it.
I told a friend about it, and we started talking about the relevance of social networks in our lives. Told her a story about my Mom that always stuck with me. A lot of my humbleness comes from my mom, I think. (though some would argue I'm anything but humble) When she first heard about the notion of Livejournal (online diaries) she said, "Who the fuck do they think they are that they're so important that people would want to read about their lives??"
That really stuck with me. Facebook is the same idea.
Got me thinking about Maslow. Maslow says that we need Love/Belonging. That we need people to care about us, and putting our lives online gives us that attention we crave... but who the fuck do we think we are? :)
Lost my train of thought there for a second...
I could be wrong, but do I interpret his pyramid in such a way that the higher things are more important? Like, if I have Esteem and Self Actualization that things like Safety and Love aren't as important? It feels like that's how it goes. My own strength should be what carries me through each day. I know that "no man is an island," but we all have it within ourselves to be great on our own. Whatever God you believe in gave us everything we need.
Your actual friend and family are just the icing on the cake.
(And yes, I see the irony is talking about "who do you think you are" while blogging. However, my blog doesn't have any followers, but I keep posting anyway!)
